OK, I thought a lot of concern about the mercury from a broken thermometer was woo. However, after looking around, I see that this amount of mercury can contaminate the air with mercury to a hazardous level.
There are efforts to exchange mercury thermometers. Hey, kids! Organize a thermometer exchange in your neighborhood!

Really, there are better thermomometric alternatives than mercury.
I'll wait until those kids show up.
